Lahma bil Basal

This recipe from Culinary Adventures with Camilla was her contribution to this months Eat the World challenge and I knew I had to try it. Thought not the traditional pairing, it was delicious with couscous.

2 lb. beef strips
3 medium onions
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp. butter
1 bay leaf
3 c. beef broth
1/2 tsp. hot paprika
Salt & Pepper to taste

Pre-heat the oven to 350*F.

Heat the butter and oil in a medium cast iron pot with a lid. Add the meat, in batches, until all of it is browned in spots. It doesn't need to be cooked all the way through, just seared.

Add the meat back to the pan along with the bay leaf, broth, paprika, and salt and pepper. Place all the onions on top. Pour the broth over the top and place the lid on the pot.

Place in the oven for 2 hours. Remove the lid and check the meat to see if the meat is tender. If not, return to the oven for an additional 1-2 hours.

Serve with flat bread, rice, or couscous.
