Serbian Musaka

This Serbia dish is a delicious and simple casserole the combines caramelized onions, meat, and sliced potatoes. This great recipe comes from Tara's Multicultural Table with a few adjustments. According to Balkan Lunch Box this dish is eaten in Bosnia, Croatia, and Macedonia as well.

3 large onions, chopped
6 Tbsp. olive oil, divided
2 lb. ground beef
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika
2 lb. baking potatoes
2 c. sour cream
1 c. milk
5 eggs

Pre-heat your oven to 400*.

Heat half the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring infrequently, until the onions start to brown. Continue cooking until the onions are golden throughout, about 15 minutes. Turn the heat to medium high and add the ground beef. Add the paprika, 1/2 tsp. salt, and pepper and stir to crumble and combine. Cook until cooked through. Remove from the heat and set aside.

While the onions and then meat are cooking, peel the potatoes and then slice an 1/8th of an inch thick. Sprinkle the the potatoes with the remaining olive oil and salt, stir to combine and coat the potatoes with the oil.

In a bowl whisk together the sour cream, milk, salt, and eggs.

Layer a third of the potatoes in the bottom of a 9x13 in. casserole dish. Top with half the meat, another third of the potatoes. then top with the remaining meat and remaining potatoes. Drizzle the sour cream mixture over the top allowing it to sink in before adding more.

Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Check the potatoes for doneness and remove from the oven if cooked. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before cutting so the casserole stays together better when serving.
